Toothache and swelling
A toothache can come from a cavity, a crack, a gum problem or an infection. This visit is for an adult whose tooth or gum hurts and doesn't ease.
- Swelling that spreads to your face, eye or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, a serious blow to the head, or bleeding that won't stop needs emergency care now. Go to an emergency room or call 911. If a tooth is knocked out or broken, call our office right away.
What happens
Step by step
- 01
Step 1: You call and describe it
Tell us where it hurts, what makes it worse and whether your face is swelling.
- 02
Step 2: Dr. Olmos finds the cause
An exam of the tooth and gums, and an X-ray to see below the surface.
- 03
Step 3: She tells you what she sees
What is wrong, the choices, and what happens if you wait. Nothing starts before you've agreed.
- 04
Step 4: Treatment or a plan
Some causes are treated at the visit. Others are calmed and treated at the next one. Usually one or two visits.
Comfort, choices and care
What to expect
Comfort
We numb the area first. Say so any time it hurts and we stop.
If you wait
An infection can spread, and she explains the signs to watch for. Swelling that spreads to your eye or neck needs an emergency room.
Risks and after-care
Medicine or treatment can have side effects. She explains them, and gives you written after-care and a number to call.
How it's billed
The written estimate comes before treatment. You get the fee in writing before treatment, and a receipt after. We file claims for many PPO plans.

Can I take something until the visit?
Ask us on the phone. Don't put aspirin against the gum.
When is swelling an emergency room matter?

Will you take an X-ray?
If Dr. Olmos needs one to find the cause. She tells you why.
Can you see me if I'm not a patient?
Yes. Call and tell us what's happening.
